Advertising Contest

Changes to the Advertising Contest

The Advertising Contest will shift to the calendar year and integrate fully with the editorial contest for the 2017 contest year.  The entry period will be on the calendar year, meaning work published for the six-month gap (June 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016) will not be considered.  There will be no advertising contest in summer 2017.  The revised contest will be called Editorial & Design contest and the awards program will also be combined (and will continue to be held in May).

Entry Period

The contest is open for entries December 1, 2017. All entries must be uploaded to the contest portal by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, January 26, 2018.

How to Enter

Review the categories and select the entry material. The idea for the ad or campaign must be produced by the member publication for entry in the contest.  The execution or actual design of the ad or campaign does not need to be local.  All categories, unless specified, accept single ads OR campaigns. There are no mail-in entries for this contest; everything is online.

Speak with your publication’s Contest Manager, as this person will upload the entries into the online platform.

Eligibility

The contest is open to all staff members and freelancers of active members. Freelancers are not able to enter individually and must enter through the publications they write for. Click for full Contest Rules.

For the purpose of the Advertising Contest, there are three circulation divisions: Daily, Non-Daily, and Online-only.

Judging

The entries will be judged by newspaper professionals from a sister press association.

Awards

Certificates will be awarded to first and second-place winners in each division. In addition, one Best of Show award is presented in each category, regardless of circulation division.  Finally,  points earned in the contest are combined with points earned on the editorial side of the contest and tallied for an overall News Organization of the Year award in each editorial division. First place earns three points and second place earns two points. In a tie, the number of first-place wins will be the determining factor.

A single Best of Show Ad (category 1-6), Best House Promotion Ad (category 13) and Best Promotion of Publication (category 14) will be selected from the top entries as chosen by the judges. Each attendee at the awards program event will have the opportunity to vote.  The winners will receive the "Best of" traveling trophies.
