Tracie Rawson wins Designer of the Year 2019

Tracie Rawson of the Baltimore Sun is MDDC’s 2019 Designer of the Year. This award is based on a designer’s work through the contest cycle.  Each designer is required to submit 8-10 pieces, showing creativity and the ability to design across platforms and a letter of recommendation from his or her manager.

The entries were judged by MDDC Press Foundation Board members. This year, there were three strong nominations showing a diversity of approaches and styles.

The judges remarked on Rawson’s spectacular work, going on to note her work is creative, versatile and extraordinary. “Overall, these entries are the finest [we have] EVER seen, including a spectacular “Top Workplaces” entry and equally great “Baltimore’s Best.”

In her nomination letter, Leeann Adams of The Baltimore Sun shared, “Tracie is willing to do what it takes to get the most compelling visuals for the pages she designs. Whether through her original illustrations, photo art direction or design work, she’s always looking for ways to engage the reader with the unexpected.”

About our nominees

Jen Ellingsworth, Cape Gazette

Laura Ritter of the Cape Gazette, Jen’s nominating editor, writes, “Jen consistently goes above and beyond what reporters provide; she improves headlines and captions and seeks out images to enrich the reporting, also choosing design elements and colors to create pages that engage readers, draw them into the text and enhance our storytelling.”

Katie Powderly, Frederick News-Post

In her recommendation letter, Frederick News-Post Creative Director Anna Joyce recognized Katie Powderly’s design skill in ad campaigns. “When you see one of these promotions—be it a poster around town, a print ad in our weekend entertainment publication, or an Instagram post—whether for a band at a bar that advertises with us or a performance at our historic local theater that books national talent, you know it’s one of Katie’s.”
