Join your colleagues and MDDC Hotline Attorney Alice Neff Lucan for a discussion of libel, both for traditional print and for the Web, and for a review of basic copyright protections. Lucan will cover the three major points of libel law a reporter should consider when writing a critical story and then she will look at how the Internet has put a different spin on libel lawsuits. Participants will look at what laws make the Web different from print and will examine several recent Web-based lawsuits. The program will wrap with a review of the basics of copyright—things that have never been clear or clearly understood about the protection. When does it start? Must it be registered for or is it implicit with ownership? With news aggregators and indexers appropriating content, what kind of protection do you have? Do you need more?
