MDDC
is on board in support of Sunshine Week, the expanded national campaign to bolster public
support for open government which begins March 11. Funded in part by the Knight Foundation
and spearheaded by the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the intent is to draw
attention to open government and start a public dialogue about the public's right to
access government information. The following materials are available for member newspapers
to use in cooperation with this effort. However, newspapers are asked not to publish any
of this material before March 11. Check back regularly for new postings.

For Sunshine Week 2007, MDDC's member newspapers participated
in a national initiative to audit public information access in each state. Maryland member
newspapers made unannounced visits to Local Emergency Planning Commission offices across
Maryland to request copies of their plans for emergency preparedness and for dealing with
hazmat emergencies. Federal law requires that the response plans be made available to the
general public upon request. The content provided here focuses on the results of the audit
in Maryland. (Postings are in PDF format. If you want TXT or DOC format, please email your
request to swilder@mddcpress.com.)
