Arts & Entertainment Editor, Cecil Whig, Elkton, MD

Job Reports To: Managing Editor

Job Summary
The Arts and Entertainment Editor’s primary responsibilities are to write, edit, photograph and proof content for the print and electronic versions of the Cecil Whig newspaper's Accent, or arts and entertainment, section. Responsibilities will include ensuring resulting copy is free of typos, grammatical errors and misspellings, proofing pagination of the section three times a week, using local and other sources to supplement content, while focusing on digital readership by using associated websites, videos, photos galleries, etc.

The successful candidate must be a flexible, self-starters, attentive to details, diplomatic, able to provide direction, and able to multi-task. This position will work successfully with different personality types. Candidates for this position should have strong interpersonal skills and client orientation and exhibit an ability to work effectively with internal and external contacts as a team member as well as a team leader.

Essential Functions:

  • Creates topic specific content.
  • Meets deadlines for each product.
  • Works with the digital editors and IT to manage associated websites.
  • Crafts accurate and timely stories.
  • Ensures that copy is clean, has a strong lead, clear focus, and excellent graphics (print & digital)
  • Works with other editors in the region to collect content related to specific editions as necessary.
  • Works with pagination team to develop clean, inviting layouts.
  • Develops community contacts.


Proficiency in basic computer skills and programs. Ability to shoot and edit photographs and video. Adept with digital and social media. Ability to balance work on multiple tasks while meeting deadlines. Eager to learn new skills. Knowledge of InDesign is a plus.


Must have own transportation.


Experience writing arts and entertainment stories is required. While prior professional experience is preferred, new graduates with collegiate writing experience will also be considered. Must possess excellent communication, planning and time-management skills. Knowledge of newspaper-writing style and familiarity with AP Style is required.


Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related fields preferred; equivalent work experience will be considered.
