Assignment Editor, Baltimore Sun, Baltimore, MD

The Baltimore Sun has an opening for a content editor in Metro news, who would be responsible for assigning, editing and enhancing audience-focused content for multiple platform presentation (print, internet, mobile). In addition to preparing articles and story packages for print, the position duties also include working with reporters, columnists, bloggers, visual journalists and database journalists on content development and execution; editing text and writing compelling headlines, teasers and story summaries; tagging content with appropriate keywords; and helping to keep the digital channels updated in a timely manner.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise and work with reporters on story and content development, ensuring the content is fair, balanced and compelling.

Work with reporters to develop enterprise pieces providing contextual news and information off of beats

Ensure content is edited quickly for digital distribution – mobile alerts and concise web versions – followed by a newspaper version if selected by the head of print.

Use expertise and good judgment in assigning the most appropriate content formats for the platform, working with the reporters, visual staff and database staff.

Ensure that headlines are optimized for search engines.

 Help manage the timeliness and presentation of any topic area or digital channel assigned to him/her.

Work with the community coordinator and reporter/bloggers to develop story ideas that spark community discussion.

Use audience metrics/analytics to inform decisions on content assignments and content placement on the channel.

 

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field, or equivalent experience

Excellent writing and editing skills

Prior experience as an editor

Proven ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management system. 1-2 years of professional Web site production experience is preferred.

Fluency in Web technology and online content publishing required

Must work well in a team environment, have the ability to multitask in a deadline-driven environment, and adapt constructively to change

Must be technically savvy and able to quickly master new processes and software tools used for content editing and production

Personal or professional experience using Web-based social networks is preferred, or must become adept at using them.
