Communications Manager, Society for Science & the Public, Washington DC

The Society for Science & the Public seeks a smart, hard-working and creative Communications Manager with a strong interest in STEM education and public relations for our growing Communications Department. The ideal candidate will be a problem solver and self-starter with strong written and oral communications skills. Candidates should demonstrate proven project management skills, have strong organizational skills, and be able to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Reporting directly to the Chief Communications Officer, the Communications Manager will have at least five years of full-time professional work experience.

Job Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Draft printed materials, such as news releases, online content, annual reports, briefing documents, and talking points.
  • Conduct media relations to support Society programs, including developing and managing relationships with key reporters, pitching reporters and editors, and serving as a potential spokesperson.
  • Provide counsel and support to colleagues.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive media strategies.
  • Draft blog posts and contribute to blog strategy.
  • Maintain contact databases and developing media lists.
  • Attend events and meetings and preparing follow-up reports.
  • Travel to all science competitions organized by the Society for Science & the Public is mandatory, which may involve weekend and evening work.

Competencies:

  • Excellent attention to detail and high standard of work output.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working on an agency or nonprofit organization media team is highly valued, along with the ability to use media monitoring tools.
  • Strong media relations, story development, and pitching skills are required.
  • High level of professionalism and time management skills.
  • Experience with social media and tools related to media outreach, including Cision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
  • A flexible, collaborative, and collegial work style.

Required Education and Experience:

  • B.A. degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, or other applicable field.
  • At least five years of relevant, full-time professional work experience required.
