General Assignment, Military and Veterans, Health and Medical Reporter

The reporter for this position will cover the largest center of employment in Frederick County, Maryland -- the U.S. Army’s Fort Detrick. About 8,000 people work there, but only 2,000 are uniformed military. The rest are researchers into the life sciences, and into providing for the nation’s bio-defenses. Scientists on Fort Detrick have researched Ebola, Zika and other viruses and helped to come up with treatments. This is cutting-edge science coverage.

A big part of the National Cancer Institute also is on Fort Detrick – indeed some of the most innovative cancer research in the country is being conducted here in Frederick County. Some Department of Homeland Security functions also reside on Fort Detrick.

So this reporter needs a familiarity with the military, the federal government, and with the health and life sciences, or at least one of the above. The reporter will also cover Frederick Memorial Hospital, which is not just a building but a growing and networked health care system here in the county. Finally, this reporter will cover military veterans’ issues. Many veterans reside in Frederick County, and next door in West Virginia is a large VA medical center.

So, ideally, this candidate will be familiar with the military, and can learn health, or be familiar with health issues, and can learn the military aspects. This beat is also full of project and enterprise-reporting opportunities. This is a beat for someone who can explain complicated topics in easy-to-understand language, work long-term on developing sources, and has an investigative bent.

Frederick County is Maryland’s largest in land area, No. 1 in agriculture and is a fast-growing jurisdiction of a quarter million people just 45 miles from Washington D.C. and from Baltimore.

We are a seven-day daily paper and 24/7 website that is the No. 1 source for news in Frederick County. The county is interesting and diverse and has two four-year colleges plus a community college, is home to Maryland’s second largest city (Frederick), and to a thriving biotech and life sciences employment base with 85 biotech companies and the National Cancer Institute. The county also hosts the Appalachian Trail, Camp David and many outdoor recreation opportunities, plus a growing entertainment, food, and music scene in Frederick’s historic downtown. It is also a center of American history, being framed by three Civil War battlefields – Gettysburg, Antietam, and Monocacy.

This reporter should have two or more years of experience, or equivalent, and be highly motivated and curious enough to investigate and break major stories. We plan to fill this job with a reporter who can produce well-written, hard-hitting daily stories, as well as short and long-term enterprise assignments. We’re also looking for an individual who has a keen sense for news, can generate interesting story ideas, is a team player, has a positive attitude, and can, in a collaborative spirit, work with others under daily deadline pressures. Must also be internet/social media savvy and possess online skills to include writing brief web updates and posting stories to our website, as well as a willingness to shoot videos and photographs.

A Bachelor’s degree is required and so, too, is an ability to write. Must have excellent grammar skills and knowledge of AP style. Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and furnish current driving record with no more than two points for a period of two years, and an acceptable driving history with no suspensions.

This full-time position will work a Monday through Friday schedule, generally 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with an hour for lunch but the ability to work a flexible schedule to include some nights, weekends and holidays in rotation with other reporters.

Please send resume, cover letter/essay (with salary requirements) outlining why you are a good fit for this job, plus five clips, or links to clips, from the stories you are most proud of, to Jobs@newspost.com (please include “military/health/general assignment reporter” in subject line). You may also come by and complete an application anytime Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm: 351 Ballenger Center Drive, Frederick, MD.
