General Manager & Editorial Director, Washington Post, Washington DC

Reports to: Publisher & CEO, The Washington Post

Motivation

You enjoy the fast-paced, always-on environment unique to global media organizations like The Washington Post.  Waking up early in the morning every day to provide quality editing and guidance to high-intellect, premier columnists with national syndication is something you have extensive experience with and enjoy doing.  You have many years of experience leading cross-functional teams of 20+ employees, including editors, salespeople, customer service agents, and billing functions and have a natural preference for devoting substantial time to leading, listening, coaching, and managing a complex operation.  You are a skillful journalist and editor in your own right, but with a track record of successfully managing budgets, P&Ls, and aggressive revenue targets.  An organization-builder, you naturally devote time each week to working with other groups throughout the organization, including Engineering, Operations, and HR.  You understand that technology is a critical component to the future of your business and value the partnership that tech teams can provide.  You are thoughtful about managing change and push your team in smart ways toward a new and better future.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the daily operation of the B2B News Service & Syndicate team, which includes 20+ experienced editors, sales and service people, and embedded developers, who produce, edit, and sell substantive, top-quality content to newspapers and other media clients around the country and world.
  • Provide seasoned and high-quality editorial direction to an array of nationally syndicated columnists each day, including content ideas, suggestions, and copyediting.  Ensure their voices are relevant, timely, and optimized for maximum reach across multiple channels.
  • Provide direction and support for the News Service team as they work three shifts each day to edit and prepare published content from The Post’s Newsroom for consumption by their clients nationwide.
  • Set aggressive sales targets and motivate the sales team to achieve those targets.  Join sales calls as appropriate in support of existing clients as well as in reaching new and prospective clients.
  • Manage contracts and partnerships between third-party content providers, including Bloomberg News, Japan News, and Foreign Policy Magazine to maximize the value for News Service & Syndicate subscribers.
  • Work closely with the Digital Subscriptions team in developing B2B and B2C strategies that enhance the reach and effectiveness of both programs.
  • Establish pricing strategy for all accounts, considering the size and content goals of each client.
  • Continuously search for ways to improve the News Service & Syndicate client portal, partnering closely with Engineering to leverage cutting-edge technologies in creating a better, more compelling experience for clients.
  • Serve as resident “talent scout” of the News Service & Syndicate team, constantly searching for strong talent both inside and outside of The Post
  • Closely manage revenue and expense targets for the entire News Service & Syndicate function, ensuring operating income targets for each year are achieved.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or equivalent experience required; Master’s degree in a similar or related field preferred
  • At least 10 years’ experience successfully leading a diverse, 24/7, content-producing operation
  • Substantial experience editing syndicated opinion writers and columnists, building relationships and increasing their impact and reach over time
  • Substantial experience managing budgets and sales targets with a proven track record of achieving or exceeding targets
  • Proven ability to think expansively about growth opportunities, both content generation and sales, in a way that is ambitious yet achievable, and persuade teams to think expansively about how to support the vision for growth
