Writer /Editor, Fact Tank

Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world. It conducts public opinion polling, demographic research, media content analysis and other empirical social science research in the areas of U.S. politics and policy views; media and journalism; internet and technology; science and society; religion and public life; Hispanic trends; global attitudes and U.S. social and demographic trends. Pew Research Center does not take policy positions. It is a subsidiary of The Pew Charitable Trusts. The Center's work is carried out by a staff of about 150.

Position Summary:

The Writer/Editor will edit and write posts for Fact Tank, Pew Research Center's data journalism blog, as assigned by the Senior Editor. The Writer/Editor will help coordinate the production flow of publishing efforts by contributing and vetting ideas for posts and working closely with the Fact Tank team and representatives from each of the center's research areas to see them through the publication process. The ideal candidate will have a strong news sense and editorial judgment; superb editing and headline-writing skills; digital journalism experience; a talent and appreciation for data visualization and visual journalism; a comprehension of quantitative research; and an interest in understanding digital audience behavior and in building the value and audience for the Pew Research Center's work. While this is not a technical position, the Writer/Editor must have a solid understanding of how the web and other digital platforms work, familiarity with web content management systems including WordPress, and a basic understanding of HTML markup, graphics, social media platforms and web analytics. Candidates should have strong collaborative orientation and work well across functions and departments around the Center.

Job Requirements

Editing Blog (70%)

Line edits blog posts to ensure they meet Pew Research Center standards of rigor, quality, accuracy and impartiality.
Collaborates with researchers to discuss and develop blog posts written by experts working in a variety of research areas across the organization.
Serves as the primary editor of Fact Tank as needed by the Senior Editor.
Ensures that the blog includes a variety of content relevant to the current news cycle. Looks for opportunities to incorporate multimedia elements including charts, infographics, video, slideshows, timelines, curations, etc.
Reviews the editing and writing of headlines and timing of stories, ensuring that content is clear, compelling, accurate and timely.
Ensures that online stories, data visualizations, quizzes and multimedia content meet the center's editorial and style standards.
Uses social media, viral methods and emerging technology to disseminate our content in order to optimize opportunities for growing Pew Research Center's audience.
Works with communications, research and digital strategy teams to develop content aimed at audiences on web, tablet, mobile and other emerging forms of technology.
Trains and serves as a resource to writers and researchers across the Center on writing and editing for the web and other digital platforms. Conceiving of original ideas and writing new content for Fact Tank (30%)

Develops new ideas for stories, visual features, multimedia pieces, factsheets, timelines, backgrounders and other content types grounded in Pew Research data that inform the public about important trends relevant to the news.
Works with senior writers and researchers to create new content that informs the public about numbers that are making news.

Knowledge of AP Style
Knowledge of basic web production tools including WordPress, content management systems, web analytics and search engine optimization
Knowledge of social media and emerging trends in digital communication
Must be highly organized and able to juggle multiple projects under tight deadlines
Must be proactive, collaborative and able to work in a cross-functional team, bridging technical and editorial skill-sets


Bachelor's degree
5-10 years of digital journalism experience, preferably at well-recognized organizations
Experience in a fast-paced work environment
Broad familiarity with subjects covered by Fact Tank and the Pew Research Center
Demonstrated facility with stories with a quantitative focus
