Senior News Editor wanted

Express, The Washington Post’s award-winning commuter daily, is looking for a versatile editor to join the paper’s fast-paced newsroom as Senior News Editor. In this critical role, your chief responsibility will be to ensure that all pages produced by our small, hard-working news desk are executed with the utmost finesse under tight deadlines.

The ideal candidate will have a creative, entrepreneurial spirit matched with superb line editing and leadership skills. She or he will be expected to help us sift through the daily glut of wire copy, Washington Post stories and social media fodder to find the most compelling mix of content, and then collaborate with fellow editors and our design staff to produce the smartest, most engaging news package possible.
This is a hands-on editing job. The right candidate will have seasoned news judgment, an eye for design and all the skills of a star copy editor. A proven knack for writing brilliant headlines in a variety of styles is essential. The right person will be comfortable working on pages in InDesign or a similar design program and will have at least five years of editing experience in a print environment using AP style.
Express enjoys a stable and enthusiastic audience of more than 300,000 readers a day who, despite the long-forecast demise of news in print, continue to see the paper as an indispensible part of their daily media diet. Our mission, our design and our nimble newsroom provide a terrific opportunity for an innovative thinker to experiment with ways to translate what consumers find so compelling about today’s digital and social media into a print experience that both informs and delights readers daily.
This job has a Sunday-Thursday schedule and requires some evening hours, but our early deadline means shifts typically end by 8 p.m.
Please send letter, resume, five to 10 writing/editing samples and salary requirements to workatexpress@washpost.com. Please put Senior News Editor in your subject line.
