Investigative Reporter, Thinkprogress.org, Washington DC

posted December 16, 2016
Description:

Reports to: Senior Editor, ThinkProgress
Staff reporting to this position: None
Department: Communications, Think Progress
Position classification: Exempt, full time

ThinkProgress has an immediate opening for an investigative reporter to join a team working on ThinkProgress’ mission of trustworthy journalism with a progressive worldview. This reporter will likely focus extensively—but not exclusively—on reporting that holds President-elect Donald Trump and the incoming administration accountable.

The investigative reporter will work with a Senior Editor and a small team of political and investigative reporters, developing coverage both long term and fast twitch that focuses on the incoming administration. The ideal candidate will also be flexible on a beat that can vary broadly and can include climate change; criminal justice; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues; reproductive health; and beyond.

This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by WGA East. ThinkProgress is a news site driven by progressive values and dedicated to providing our readers with rigorous reporting and analysis from that perspective.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop thoughtful, unique pitches and plan reporting for investigative pieces of journalism.
  • Build sources and maintain a steady stream of public records requests and other inbound original source material.
  • Write regularly for the site, including quick hits on occasion.
  • Help with fact-checking.
  • Help decide new areas of focus for ThinkProgress’ accountability journalism, especially related to the Trump administration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Strong instincts for what makes a good piece of investigative journalism.
  • Two or more years of experience on investigative work in a newsroom. Investigative work in this case means experience with public records requests such as the Freedom of Information Act, travel and subject interviews, original source document review, facility with financial records, and a track record of responsibly reporting on records not previously available to the public or other media.
  • Familiarity with progressive news and viewpoints.

You can excel in this position if you:

  • Are self-motivated but work well with others.
  • Can ably juggle more than one piece of reporting at a time.
  • Communicate well with your editor.

This position is not for you if you:

  • Struggle to generate your own story ideas.
  • Need coaching on reporting techniques or basic writing skills.
  • Maintain a narrow focus on one beat.
  • Have difficulty varying your pace of coverage.
