Lead Reporter (part-time), Technical.ly, Washington DC

Technically Media, a local news and events organization best known for its local tech news network Technical.ly, is hiring a part-time Lead Reporter to contribute reporting, develop an audience and maintain relationships on behalf of Technical.ly DC.

This person with exceptional news and community building instincts will work with the Technical.ly Editor-in-Chief and Technical.ly Associate Editor to effectively and comprehensively report on the early stage tech, entrepreneurship and innovation community of Washington, D.C.

We believe that journalism is a necessary act for strengthening any community. Our mission is to use editorial to grow an audience of technologists and entrepreneurs inspired by local impact and bring them to action. That action can include seeking career opportunities, being inspired to greater work, connecting to community resources or other acts related to our mission. You are our local champion for our network of services.

The ideal candidate will excel in balancing source relationships to consistently deliver valuable community news quickly and accurately. You should have experience in and a willingness to experiment with new media and be interested in supporting and learning from a journalistic enterprise — a journalism organization that gives value to all community members, including readers, event attendees and sponsors. Plus, as a small, growing news media startup, we’re probably more fun than your traditional editorial role.

This is a 25- to 30-hour a week, part-time position paid between $1,750 to $2,000 monthly or $21,000 to $24,000 annually, depending on experience and output. Part-time staff can buy into the company healthcare plan (currently with Independence Blue Cross) and dental coverage (United Concordia).

  • Grow and support an audience of local technologists and entrepreneurs
  • File 3 items a day, including at least one reported feature
  • File at least one monthly “big headline” larger enterprise report, including evergreen, investigative or other deeply sourced piece about the community
  • Use daily reporting and source relationships to find trends and grow smaller threads into larger concepts
  • Develop and maintain sources and other relationships with leading community members
  • Attend at least one community event a week, both to report and be present
  • Attend and speak at relevant events to raise awareness of our work across Technical.ly markets
  • Participate in and support social media strategy for the Technical.ly market, including limited live-tweeting and engagement and social sharing on places like the market Twitter handle, community Facebook groups, Reddit and our public Slack group
  • Serve as a resource and liaison between the Technically Media team and the Technical.ly DC market
