Military Reporter, Soundoff!, Baltimore, MD

Soundoff!, a civilian enterprise weekly newspaper for service members and Department of Defense civilians at Fort Meade, Maryland, with a circulation of more than 12,000 and printed by the Baltimore Sun Media Group, is seeking a reporter.


  • Report and write news stories and human-interest features on military and civilian personnel, Soldier and Family Programs, and garrison events. This includes: military training, environmental issues, health initiatives and education. Also includes sports and recreation as reporter will be required to cover military unit intramural games, including football and basketball, and some high school sports.
  • Candidates should thrive in team-based environment and be willing to step in and assist other beat reporters when necessary, and have a willingness to work outside his or her beat to contribute to the newspapers' mission of being the premiere source of news at Soundoff.
  • Develop original story ideas for news articles and communication products in consultation with the editor; arrange and conduct interviews; and write in structurally clear and clean manner.
  • Must be able to take photographs and write supporting cutlines, and produce online video. Instruction available.
  • Ability to connect with the needs of the military community: service members, military families, military retirees, veterans, and federal civilian employees.
  • Job requires working 40 hours per week, which could include nights and weekends as job dictates.
  • Familiarity with military culture is a plus.


  • A bachelor's degree and at least one year journalism experience, or the equivalent, is required.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines with copy that is clean of spelling and grammatical errors and follows AP Style, placing the highest emphasis on accuracy.
  • Experience writing website content and able to use digital platforms including social media, Twitter, Facebook.
  • The position includes working closely with the Fort Meade Public Affairs Office. Fort Meade has the third largest population of Army installations in the United States and is Maryland’s largest employer with more than 50,000 employees, residential neighborhoods and seven Anne Arundel County public schools on post.

Soundoff! is printed by Baltimore Sun Media Group, a private firm, which is in no way connected to the Department of the Army, under a written contract with Fort Meade.
