Reporter / Host, American University, Washington DC

Under the supervision of the Desk Editor, the Host-Reporter conceives, develops, and shapes key news stories into broadcast and digital content as part of WAMU’s regional news coverage.  He/she identifies and pitches story ideas, conducts interviews with diverse sources, and produces in-depth enterprise journalism that provides value to listeners within the designated coverage area. He/she also represents WAMU on-air regularly as a weekend host and primary fill-in anchor.     

Educational Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field. Master’s degree in journalism or related field.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 4+ years’ experience live hosting and reporting in an on-air capacity with experience building a beat and developing topical expertise  
  • Excellent on-air communicator with a conversational, warm and inviting presentation and top-notch pronunciation and enunciation
  • High level of proficiency with operation of a digital broadcast board.   Experience representing an organization at live events and speaking engagements
  • Top-notch writing, researching and reporting skills with ability to shift comfortably between writing radio scripts, online news articles, explainers, and longer pieces
  • Hands-on audio editing and multimedia production capabilities, particularly photo and video
  • Experience building audience connections using social media and mining social media platforms for story ideas, angles, and sources
  • Experience with one or more content management systems (ideally WordPress)      

Preferred Requirements:

  • Deep knowledge of the Washington region
