Reporter, Maryland Independent, White Plains, MD

Job Summary
Candidates must have strong writing, research and people skills. In addition to writing, the position requires ability to write stories and take photographs and video for the Maryland Independent, its website and also to share content with the company’s weekly publications. Duties include assigned beat work of meetings; police and fire coverage and other spot news, and court coverage. Enterprise and feature stories strongly encouraged to round out each week’s production with accompanying photographs and video. Specialty areas of interests such as land use, environment, health, and science encouraged. Proficiency with the Internet, social media and video taking required. This is a full-time position, with weeknight and weekend assignments part of the job.

Job Functions

The successful candidate must be flexible, attentive to details, diplomatic, able to take direction, and able to multi-task. This position will work with different personality types and across a number of publications. Candidates for this position should have strong interpersonal skills and client orientation and exhibit an ability to work effectively with internal and external contacts as a team member as well as a team leader.

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to write and to provide clean copy, to take photos and video, strong organizational skills.
  • Must be able to accept instruction and editing suggestions from editors.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively with the public.
  • Perform job duties and conduct self in accordance with company core values.
  • Initiate and nurture effective, professional relationships with internal and external contacts.

Minimum Requirements:

Prior reporting/editing experience preferred.

Demonstrated ability to multi-task.

Must have own transportation.

Technology Skills:      

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook and experience using online content systems and social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Knowledge and experience in copy editing, proofreading and page layout/design guidelines.

Education:      

Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field required or equivalent work experience.
