Reporter, PolitiFact, Washington DC

Description:

Do you think words matter? Are you savvy when it comes to sorting out real facts from the alternative ones? Are you independent enough to call out anyone, anywhere, who distorts the truth?

If so, you might be the reporter PolitiFact is looking for to fact-check the Trump administration and the rest of the political world.

We’re looking for a fact-checker who can handle a deep dive into policy. You will read research reports, including the footnotes, and you’ll ferret out the nation’s leading experts on both general and obscure topics. You’ll write snappy leads and quick turns of phrase. Most of all, you’ll need a willingness to challenge your own preconceptions and stay open-minded.

The work is web-first and competitive. We like self-starters. The job requires hustle, but never at the expense of accuracy.

We cultivate a team-based approach at PolitiFact, so we prize collegiality. We regularly ask ourselves how to get better at the craft of journalism, and we are constantly on the lookout for professional development opportunities for our entire team. We look for ways to innovate and launch new projects, both to keep ourselves engaged and to make our competitors jealous.

We take fact-checking seriously, but we don’t take ourselves seriously. We try to have fun while we do this important work.

PolitiFact is a leader of the fact-checking movement in American political journalism. We won the Pulitzer Prize for our fact-checking of the 2008 campaign. Our home newspaper, the Tampa Bay Times, is widely regarded among the best in the nation, known for high-impact, high-quality journalism. Our team members regularly appear in national and international media reports to explain fact-checking and American politics. Globally, we work with the International Fact-checking Network to support other fact-checking efforts around the world. This position can be based in Washington, D.C., or Tampa/St. Petersburg, depending on mutual agreement.

Sound like a good fit for you? Please send a resume, cover letter and three clips (published with an established news organization) to PolitiFact Editor Angie Holan at holan@politifact.com with the subject line, "PolitiFact Reporter Job." Please mention any special skills in foreign language or multimedia.
