Senior Editor, ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership - Washington, DC

Title: Senior Editor

Department ivision: Editorial Department/Marketing and Communications Division

Supervisor: Editor-in-Chief

Summary of Duties: Contributes to content published in all Associations Now channels and assists in setting strategic direction for the brand. Writes or lead-edits features, departments, and supplements for bimonthly print magazine. Writes a weekly blog on membership issues for AssociationsNow.com and assists with daily news editing. Manages development and editing of online, members-only content for distribution in Associations Now Plus newsletter. Contributes to the development of synergies among ASAE content vehicles.

Specific duties include:

  •  Writes, edits, and proofreads copy for Associations Now magazine as assigned, including writing or lead-editing an average of one feature per issue, as well as departments and supplements as assigned.
  • Writes weekly Membership blog post and other stories as assigned, and assists with daily copyediting, for AssociationsNow.com.
  • In conjunction with editor-in-chief, oversees editorial beat system to ensure adequate coverage of major subject matter areas of interest to readers.
  • Copyedits staff-, freelance-, and volunteer-written articles for ASAE website; ensures that articles meet editorial and web standards (e.g., stylistic consistency, usefulness).
  • Covers 5-6 beats as assigned, generally producing one story in each beat every month.
  • Serves as primary editorial contact with volunteer relations team to ensure effective communication and cooperation with section council volunteers regarding content development.
  • Gathers material from other ASAE departments (e.g., learning, meetings) to provide article ideas; distributes leads to beat editors for development.
  • Manages schedule for posting articles on ASAE website several times a week and works closely with web content editor to ensure timely and accurate posting.
  • Serves as primary contact to email vendor distributing Associations Now Plus. Maintains regular operations (schedules, etc.), troubleshoots delivery issues, and manages any changes to the program.
  • Participates in editorial and art/design brainstorming.
  • Assists editor-in-chief in setting the strategic direction of Associations Now in print and online.
  • Performs other related functions as required by the business.

 

Other responsibilities:

  • Engages in ongoing education about topics that affect associations, particularly in assigned beat areas, including offerings from both inside and outside ASAE.
  • Represents ASAE and Associations Now at industry functions.
  • Interacts with members and other stakeholders on a regular basis.

Position Requirements:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communication, or related field.
  • Five or more years’ experience in fast-paced editorial and/or communications environments.
  • Superior writing and editing skills required. Blogging experience a plus.
  • Strong reporting and analytical skills. Ability to identify story and blog topics, locate and interview sources, analyze information, and write articles and blog posts on short timelines and working independently.
  • Association journalism experience and knowledge of association membership issues preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of editorial style, grammar, spelling, and proofreading methods.
  • Working knowledge of content management systems, HTML, and email delivery platforms.
  • Ability to manage and meet multiple overlapping deadlines for different content channels.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities, work independently and as part of a team, keep others informed through clear written and oral communication, and maintain a high level of productivity.
  • Superior attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and enough flexibility and creativity to make mid-stream adjustments to achieve desired goals.
  • Some travel is required.
