Web Editor, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD

The Center for Health Security, located in Baltimore, MD, is an independent, free-standing center of the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. This position focuses on developing and maintaining the Center's website, both graphically and editorially, and for carrying out the Center's social media communications. The position reports to the Director of Communications.

This position will play a key role in the comprehensive creative design, development, direction, and effective management of a large and critical website for the Center's diverse audience. With the Director of Communications, the Website Editor will interact with a web design firm to develop a strategic approach to and redesign of the Center's website.

This position serves as the lead in ensuring the website content and presentation are dynamic, up to date, and consistently evolving. Will assist in managing website redesign and upgrade projects, including the main website and all websites for special projects and programs in the Center. Ensures design consistency, usability, accessibility, and structural efficiency.

The Website Editor will implement the strategy for all e-communications, websites, and public relations messages to consistently articulate the Center's message. He/she will work with the Director of Communications to develop a comprehensive strategy for brand management, online and direct marketing, social media messaging, and website content and appearance and will work closely with a senior peer group in the Center to communicate the Center's content and messages.

Major responsibilities: Responsible for contributing to development and implementation of the communications strategy to promote the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security through all electronic media outlets. Duties include, but are not limited to, editing and curating content on the Center's website; maintaining graphic integrity of the website; communicating through social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other appropriate e-communications outlets. Responsible for promoting the Center's work through all communication venues.

Duties and Responsibilities:


Collaborates with the Director of Communications to ensure that the Center's website content and the Center's reputation, messages, and top priority initiatives are well communicated and promoted. Manages web strategy, including web content, development, and design. Serves as editor and writer for the Center's overall online presence. Evaluates technologies and strategies to support increasing brand awareness.


Edits all website content with a keen eye for detail to ensure consistency in voice, style, grammar, and usage. Creates content including, but not limited to, short news stories, interactive features, videos. Assists in the planning, creating, and dissemination of multimedia web content. Assists staff in writing and editing of content for the website. Reviews, edits, and publishes web content submitted by staff. Ensures that written content published on websites is clear, concise, and adheres to Center web design/style guidelines and standards.

Collaborates with designers and developers to determine the best way to present content. Maintains day-to-day website activities and workflows. Monitors website for outdated content and broken links. Ensures that content is easily findable through site navigation, local site search, and organic search. Creates analytics reporting and regularly evaluates usability and accessibility issues, including website traffic analysis, and recommends upgrades and improvements.

Documents website policies and processes. Continuously evaluates website and recommends improvements.

Social Media:

Develops compelling messages and content to be used across all Center communication channels. Develops compelling messages and content to be used across all Center communication channels. Manages messaging on all Center social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other appropriate e-communications outlets.


Works collaboratively with partners in the Center and at the JHSPH.



Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, graphic design, or related field required.


1. A minimum of two (2) years' website publishing experience required. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

2. Experience in communications, marketing, or media environment required.

3. Experience in website design and graphics is strongly preferred.

4. Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously required.

5. Excellent writing and editing skills required.

6. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with multiple groups, including JHSPH communications professionals, other staff members, administrative staff, funders, program participants, and others required.

7. Requires advanced knowledge of the following:

HTML, XHTML, CSS design, SQL, and JavaScript

ColdFusion (preferred)

Adobe Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign

Site Executive and Drupal CMS

W3C Web standards

Search engine optimization
