Republican Celebrates 125 Years

The Repulican, a weekly publication serving Garrett County, celebrated its 125th anniversary last month. The first issue was published on March 3, 1877.

Throughout the month, the newspaper celebrated the milestone by reprinting articles, editorials, advertisements and photographs that have appeared in past issues. The Repulican is also taking the opportunity to conduct a readers’ survey and inviting all readers to share their thoughts on the current version of the newspaper.

There have been just four editors in the history of The Republican, beginning with Captain James A. Hayden, a veteran of the Civil War and a strong supporter of the Republican Party. Hayden did not mince words in his writings about Democrats and often referred to them as "those people."

"Times have certainly changed, as the articles in The Republican have little to do with partisan issues," said Mary Sincell McEwen in an article about the anniversary. "In fact, at least half of the employees at the paper are registered Democrats and are not generally mistreated for it."

Following Hayden as editor was Benjamin H. Sincell, the first inductee in the MDDC Newspaper Hall of Fame. Following him were George Hanst and current editor Donald W. Sincell. The paper has been owned by the Sincell family since 1890.

Today the newspaper has a circulation of more than 11,000. You can read The Republican online at www.therepublicannews.com.
