Inland Releases Newsprint Analysis

Newspapers with circulation around 25,000 have paid lower average newsprint prices over the last nine years than newspapers of both higher and lower circulation, an Inland Press Association newsprint rate analysis shows.
The analysis, based on figures submitted by newspapers participating in the Inland Cost and Revenue Studies for Daily Newspapers, showed that a 25,000-circulation paper paid an average of $568.20 per metric ton for newsprint from 1991 through 1999.
In contrast, analysis shows that a 10,000-circulation paper paid $593.28 per metric ton. Newspapers of 50,000 circulation and 100,000 circulation paid $576.69 per metric ton and $571.74 per metric ton respectively.
The analysis was based on cost and revenue studies from 1991-1999. An average of about 330 newspapers participated in the studies each year. This year, a record 418 participated.
Newspapers that did not participate in the 1999 survey can still have their figures run against group averages and norms for a fee. Contact Jennifer Zeman at Inland (847) 795-0380 for more information.
