Weekly Newspaper Management on Tap at API Seminar
Hodding Carter III, president and CEO of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and
longtime journalist, headlines the list of speakers for API's Management of the Weekly
Newspaper seminar. Carter will lead off the week with a discussion on leadership.
- Local News is Top at NAA Gateway Site
Newspaperlinks.com, the Newspaper Association of American's gateway to newspaper Web sites
around the world, is used primarily by people looking for local news outside of their
area.
Distance Learning Reintroduced by API
The American Press Institute has reintroduced online learning to its training activities.
API's Seminars Online initiative integrates Web-based presentations and readings with Web
discussion. The learning process is monitored and guided by expert facilitators. |

Saul
Robin is publisher of the Landmark Community
Newspapers of Maryland. They include the daily Carroll County Times, winner of Newspaper
of the Year for Division C in the 2001 MDDC Editorial Contest, and the weekly community
times. He began his newspaper career at The Virginian Pilot and The Ledger Star in
Norfolk, VA, where he worked from 1978-1983 and again from 1985-1993, before joining the
Carroll County Times. He has served on the MDDC Board of Directors since 1995 and is chair
of the MDDC Technology Committee. |

Maryland Workers' Comp Coverage Includes Newspaper Carriers
Yes, the State of Maryland is a Workers' Compensation State. What does this mean to
newspaper carriers? For the purposes of workers' compensation, newspaper carriers in
Maryland are treated the same as employees.Postal Reform Bill
Dies in Committee
The latest version of the postal reform bill, H.R. 4970, did not make it out of the House
Committee on Government Reform, signaling and end to the hope that a full-scale reform
package is politically feasible on Capitol Hill this year.

Verizon has posted the complete audio recordings of the Newspaper Association of America
Foundation's Newspaper in Education (NIE) Conference on it Web site www.verizonreads.net/nieconference2002.
Access to the streaming audio segments is free and can be heard using Real Player, which
is also available free online.

INS and Justice Losing Closure Battles: All Appealed
The federal trial court in Washington, DC, became the most recent of several courts
trying to force into the open the identities and status of people jailed by the U.S.
Department of Justice and Immigration and Naturalization Service since an INS sweep after
Sept. 11th. |

The "Rate Card of the Future"
To begin with, newspapers' advertising pricing guides will no longer be referred to as
"rate cards." They will be called "pricing schedules" and will most
likely be some kind of electronic spreadsheet. These pricing schedules will be published
on newspapers' We sites, and will be fully interactive and secure. This way, each contract
advertiser will have his own, custom-designed, digitized pricing schedule.
- Area Catholic Newspapers Form Ad Alliance
The Catholic Standard newspaper in Washington, DC, has formed an advertising alliance with
three other Catholic newspapers in the region.
Advertising Could Get Caught in Bill's Crossfire
Before leaving for the congressional summer recess, the U.S. Senate debated amendments to
S. 812, the Greater Access to Affordable Pharmaceuticals Act, including amendments
providing a prescription drug benefit for seniors under Medicare. While not taking a
position on the underlying prescription drug bill, the Newspaper Association of America
was concerned that advertising would get caught in the crossfire. |
