Breaking Heroin’s Grip airs February 11

Breaking Heroin's Grip: Road to Recovery is a one-hour television event including a 40-minute documentary featuring first-hand accounts of our region's heroin epidemic, plus a 20-minute live phone bank program offering viewers expert information about treatment that aired February 11. It is produced by Maryland Public Television in partnership with the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.  Experts from Maryland’s 24-hour crisis hotline, overseen by Maryland’s Behavioral Health Administration, staffed the phone bank. The program was simulcast by numerous broadcasters (TV, radio, and web) in Maryland, as well as in surrounding states. Jeff Salkin, anchor, Maryland Public Television, hosted.

Department of Health and Mental Hygiene officials reported strong call volumes among their crisis hotline partners the weekend of February 11. Five call centers across the state handled 218 calls Saturday and Sunday.  For context, Community Crisis Services (covering Prince George's, Charles, St. Mary's and Calvert counties) typically would have two calls per weekend -- they had 52 this past weekend. Additionally, Mental Health Association of Frederick had seven calls over the weekend -- they usually average one per weekend.
