Congratulations to MDDC Advertising Award Winners
9/10/15, Annapolis, MD -- Members and supporters of the Maryland | Delaware | DC Press Association came together today at a luncheon program to honor excellence in media sales by recognizing the winners of the Advertising Contest, which celebrates print and online work completed between June 1,2014 and May 31, 2015. The contest, governed by the Association’s Press Services Committee, admitted entries from 17 member publications among 19 categories. There are four divisions in the contest, which group member publications into daily and non-daily categories, then further group them by circulation. One Best in Category award is given in each category across all divisions. New this year were special Standout Personnel categories honoring individuals in Sales and Design. The capstone award, one per division, is Advertising Sweepstakes.
This year, the Association recognized a new sales executive with its inaugural Rookie of the Year award. This award is in its first year and honors sales executives who are new to the industry, having spent less than 18 months in the role, and who have demonstrated revenue generation, sales expertise and initiative. Each honoree was nominated by his or her sales manager with a letter detailing their work. Kevin Berrier of the Frederick News-Post and Samantha Hemphill of Independent Newsmedia, Inc. won the award. Additionally, Katrina Sullivan of Independent Newsmedia, Inc. was honored with the inaugural Overcoming Obstacles sales executive award. This prize recognizes that a strong sales executive will meet challenges head-on and develop a way to move forward in order to succeed.
The Association honored two individuals as Designer of the Year: Samantha Bangh of the Frederick News-Post and Tom Maglio of the Coastal Point. This is the inaugural year for this prize and it honors a body of work over the course of the contest cycle. The submission package included 8-10 pieces of the designers work and a letter of recommendation from their manager.
The Advertising Sweepstakes awards represent the best publication in each division. These awards are chosen based on the points accumulated for first, second and third prizes in each category. In the daily divisions, The Frederick News Post won the award in Division A; and The Delaware State News was named Advertising Sweepstakes winner for Division B. For non-daily publications, the Coastal Point won in Division C and Cape Gazette won the award in Division D.

Also at the event, the Association hosted its first-ever Meet the Media: Agency Meet & Greet. This program set up private meetings between media directors of local and regional agencies and member publications to preview advertising opportunities in digital, event and print formats. This program was supported by a publication, available to members of the Association and selected agencies, that lists all MDDC members with expanded profiles of their publications and platforms.
