MDDC Programs and Services Continue Under Tight 2002 Budget
The MDDC Board of Directors has approved an Association budget for 2002 that restrains
spending in light of the poor business climate for newspapers but still allows for the
continuation of all principal MDDC services and programs. |

Newseum Closing, New
Home Under Construction
The media foundation that runs the Newseum in Rosslyn decided Dec. 7 to close the museum
in March and reopen it three years later in a new home under construction in downtown
Washington. |
API Publishes Crisis
Handbook
The American Press Institute (API) recently published Crisis Journalism: Handbook for
Media Response, which resulted from API's effort to support media organizations in
coverage of the Sept. 11 attacks and their aftermath. |
Profile: Tom Bradlee
Tom Bradlee is president and CEO of Chesapeake
Publishing Corporation headquartered in Elkton, MD. Tom's career with Chesapeake, which
was then known as Tri-State Publishing, began in 1968. He bcame general manager/publisher
of Chesapeake's Southern Delaware division in 1970 and in 1982 was named publisher of The
Cecil Whig and Chesapeake's Upper Shore Division. While publisher of The Whig, he led the
conversion of the paper from a weekly to a daily. In 1987, Tom was named president/CEO. He
was elected to the MDDC Board of Directors in 1975 and served as president in 1984, He is
also a past board member and president (1988) of the National Newspaper Association. In
1999/2000 he served as president of the Suburban Newspapers of Americam, where he has been
an officer and director since 1989. |

Advertising Third Quarter Ad Spending Drops
Newspaper advertising expenditures for the third quarter of 2001 totaled $10.6 billion, a
decrease of 10.3 percent from the same period last year, according to preliminary
estimates from the Newspaper Association of American (NAA). By comparison, total newspaper
advertising in the third quarter last year was up 4.3 percent. |

its existing software toll for Internet-based newspaper ad placement. |
