Executive Director Update July 2014

The summer has been heating up as MDDC gears up for enhanced member programs and initiatives this fall.

We’ve worked to refresh some of our committee structures and update our website. We’ve added members to the Government Affairs committee, chaired by Jim McLaughlin, Deputy General Counsel of the Washington Post, and to the Editorial committee, chaired by Terry Headlee, Managing Editor of the Frederick News-Post. Jim Lee, Editor of the Carroll County Times, and I have worked to revitalize the FOIA working group and clarify their work. In addition, a group of members has formed the Professional Development Working Group, with the express purpose of developing training sessions on a variety of topics beginning this fall. They have developed a survey (Editorial and Sales/Circulation/Business) that is included in this newsletter to understand members’ needs. You can read about the new members and charges of the various committees here. I truly appreciate the time and talents these members have given to the association!

Work is underway to refresh the categories for the Editorial and Advertising Contests. Although the categories will be not finalized until September, please set aside your best work – there will be a category to showcase it!

As we look ahead to August, Jen and I are excited to move to our new office space, in downtown Annapolis. When your travels take you to Annapolis, please stop by and visit us at 60 West Street, Suite 107, Annapolis, MD 21401 (beginning August 1). Wanda Smith and I will also be revamping our sales materials for the revenue networks in August, to help explain the advantages of the network to potential advertisers.
