Proudly Serving Maryland, Delaware and D.C. Newspapers Since 1908

Executive Director Update - September 2014

I hope you are enjoying these sunny days and the feeling of getting back into the rhythm of fall. This past summer, MDDC accomplished a great deal. We added members to various committees, started work on our professional development series and made headway on our legislative initiatives.
Rebecca Snyder, MDDC executive director

Our budget planning process is well underway and we are looking forward to a 2015 with solid revenue and slightly decreased costs. Looking forward, I am focusing on positioning our revenue networks to new advertisers with revamped promotional materials. Keeping the focus on revenue, we are assessing sponsorship advertising programs to support our internship program and signature events. Our legislative agenda in Maryland is taking shape and we will evaluate DC and Delaware needs after the general election. Our legislative priorities include focusing on expanding the Open Meetings Compliance Board duties to include hearing PIA violations as well as defending public notice issues and right of publicity. We’ve created a calendar of events that you may download (it will be on the website in the next few weeks) so mark your own calendars with these terrific events!

At the MDDC Board meetings last week, members discussed tweaks to the Editorial Contest categories. Read more about that here. They decided to push back the Advertising Contest to allow more time for a re-thinking of the program, as discussed further in this newsletter. A group of members, led by Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, board president, will come together over the next few months to discuss the dues structure of the organization and the best way to move forward.

In the next few weeks, I will be reaching out to all publishers to make sure the information we have on file for your publications is correct, and to verify your participation in our revenue networks as well as support of our sponsorship ad for the internship program. I look forward to speaking with each of you and hearing about what is happening in the industry from your perspective.
