Executive Director Update

Here at MDDC, we are coordinating contests and awards and getting ready for our signature events, all with the backdrop of legislative seasons. Read the full update.

Legislative update

The Government Affairs committee will host a legislative update call on February 27th at 10 am to provide a mid-session update for MD, DE and DC.  In April, the Committee will host a First 100 Days panel with Governor Hogan and cabinet members.  This will be an exciting event - more details will follow.  PIA reform is a strong focus, as is keeping public notice in newspapers.  We are also working on a bill to protect journalists from being compelled to testify out of state.  Read more about that bill here.

Member Services

Legal Hotline

This month, a member asked if advertisements with "Public Auction" in them need to have a licensed auctioneer involved.  Additionally, does there need to be a license or permit number in the ad?  The experts at Holland & Knight, who handle the hotline, did not find any provision in Maryland law that would require the newspaper to include the customer's license or permit number in advertising public auctions.  Do you have a question for the Hotline?

The Hotline provides legal advice to members on ad and news content, including pre-publication review for libel and the related torts, news-gathering issues such as trespass or invasion of privacy, copyright and trademark protection, on courts access, open records and open meetings.  Call Rebecca Snyder at 855-721-6332, ext 3 and she will connect you with our experts.  To read more about the hotline, click here.
