Convention to Feature Snyder, Graham, Farquar and Award Winners
The 2000 MDDC Winter Convention promises another exciting lineup of speakers and award presentations. This year's convention features Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and Washington Post Publisher Donald E. Graham, and Associated Press national writer Ted Anthony as speakers.

Newspaper Associations Oppose Postal Rate Increase
The U.S. Postal Service's request for rate increases has drawn criticism from two national newspaper organizations, both of which feel newspapers will be severely affected by the increases.
Profile:  Stewart Dobson
A second-generation Eastern Shore journalist, Stewart is president and publisher of Flag Publications, Inc., which publishes the weeklies Ocean City Today, Cablechannels and Ocean City Digest. From 1984 to 1994 he served as editor/general manager for The Beachcomber and Maryland Times-Press. He has served editorial and writing stints with The Aspen Times in Colorado, Independent Newspapers in Delaware, Maryland and Arizona, and Easton Publishing, the predecessor to Chesapeake Publishing.
Brook Named Journalist of the Year
Yoni Brook, a senior at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, was selected as the 1999-2000 MDDC High School Journalist of the Year.
MDDC Foundation Gets IRS Approval
The Internal Revenue Service has approved the MDDC Press Foundation's status as a 501(c)(3) exempt organization.

Advertising Department Update
The year 1999 proved to another busy one for the MDDC Ad Placement Service (MAPS). Its $10.7 million in gross sales exceeded budget by over 20%, largely due to the increases MDDC papers realized from JCPenney business over previous years. Maryland, Delaware and DC newspapers grossed over $7 million in MAPS placements.

Sun Takes Confidential Settlement Case to Court
The Baltimore Sun's fight to obtain civil litigation settlement information from Baltimore City moved to the Maryland Court of Appeals where a hearing was held Feb. 4.
Telemarketing Bill Leads off 2000 Legislative Season
A panel of executives from MDDC newspapers testified Feb. 8 before the Maryland Senate Finance Committee in opposition to a telemarketing bill that would impose additional state regualtions to the exisitng federal rules controlling telephone solicitation by businesses.
