Southern MD Papers Chesapeake Publishing Corp. announced earlier this month it will be selling its Southern Maryland Newspapers division to Gazette Newspapers, a division of The Washington Post Company. The sale is expected to be completed March 1. |

| Merrill Gives $10
Million to Maryland J-School; College Named in His Honor Philip Merrill, publisher and owner of The Capital in Annapolis and Washingtonian magazine, has made a $10 million gift to the University of Maryland College of Journalism, University President C.D. Mote, Jr. announced Feb. 9. In recognition of the gift, the school will be renamed the Philip Merrill College of Journalism. |

Ron Sweeney Ron started his career at The Washington Post in 1966 in the production department, and was in production management for siz years. In 1976 he moved to the advertising sales department as an account executive working in Home Furnishings, Chain and Department Stores, Automotive, etc. He is currently the Agency Relations Manager and Advertising Makeup Manager for The Post. Ron serves on the MDDC Advertising Committee and chairs its programs subcommittee. He also serves on MDDC's Professional Development Committee. |

| Baltimore Messenger
to Start Subsciption Charge The Baltimore Messenger, a free local newspaper in North Baltimore for 25 years, is beginning to charge for subscriptions and plans to expand its coverage area into the Hampden neighborhood. Free subscriptions will end April 1; the Messenger will then cost$24.95 a year. |

Criminal Records Quest Continues Following a second vote at the end of January, the Delaware Justice Information System (DELJIS) agreed to turn over some of the information requested by The News Journal as part of a three-year effort to gain access to ciminal statistical information. |

Settles Libel Case Before Retrial The libel case involving The (Annapolis) Capital and local attorney John R. Greiber, Jr. was settled out of court in mid-December for an undisclosed amount. The case had been set for retrial, following Greiber's decision not to accept a reduced award amount in the fall. |

In the center of the layout is a stock photograph of a panle truck from the late Forties or early Fifties. The background is black and white and the trucj has been tinted a light shade of blue. The cleaner's name has been skillfully inserted on the side of the truck. |
