| Tom Schmidt, president
of Carroll Publishing Co. in Washington, DC, has been nominated to lead the MDDC Press
Association for the next year. The complete officer slate nominated by the Associations Executive Committee is scheduled to be voted on by the Board of Directors at the Annual Business Meeting Feb. 28. Schmidt joined Carroll Publishing in 1991, where he is general manager of its two weekly newspapers, the Catholic Standard, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Washington, and El Pregonero, the oldest Spanish-language newspaper in the Washington market. He began his newspaper career as a sports writer for the Chicago Tribune. Since then he has been managing editor of the Delaware State News, general manager of Delaware Printing Company and director of operations for Comprint Publishing in Gaithersburg before joining Carroll Publishing. Richard Amberg, vice president and general manager of The Washington Times, has been nominated to join the MDDC officer corps as treasurer, putting him in rotation toward the presidency. He currently chairs the MDDC Circulation Committee. Amberg joined The Washington Times in 1998. He has been in the newspaper business since serving as a Navy officer 1964 1966. He was publisher of the Montgomery Advertiser for 10 years and general manager of The Free-Lance Star (Fredericksburg, VA) before joining The Times. |
| Board Member Elections Set for Feb. 28 |
| A group
of six directors, whose terms expire this year on the MDDC Board of Directors, have been
nominated for re-election at the Annual Business Meeting on Feb. 28. In addition, one new
director is being nominated to fill a one-year vacancy on the Board. Tom Marquardt, executive editor of The Capital and chair of MDDCs FOI Subcommittee, has been nominated to fill the remaining year left on the term of departing director Richard Murchake of The Capital. The other officers up for re-election are Karen Acton, Gazette Southern Maryland Newspapers; Tamra Brittingham, Independent Newspaper, Inc.; Robin Saul, Carroll County Times; Jeffrey Mezzatesta, The Cecil Whig; Wiley Hall III, The Afro-American Newspapers; Carol Melamed, The Washington Post. |
