FREE August training by National Institute on Money in State Politics

Specialized Reporting Institute August 14-15 in Missoula, Montana
The National Institute on Money in State Politics is based in Helena, Montana, with a mission is to reveal the influence of campaign money in state-level elections and public policy in all 50 states. Their comprehensive, searchable campaign-finance database, as well as relevant research, has been available for more than a decade at FollowTheMoney.org and has been cited by the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, as well as in smaller publications. (They also were cited in the SCOTUS McCutcheon decision, although deep into Chief Justice John Roberts’ ruling.)

They are growing and expanding with a new website (beta.followthemoney.org) and compiling additional information on federal campaign contributions. Knowing the importance of getting this information to reporters, the Robert R. McCormick Foundation is funding a two-day Specialized Reporting Institute, which will allow the Institute to bring 20 journalists to Missoula Aug. 14-15 for hands-on database training, using our new website and others. Our grant covers all costs – travel, lodging, food – of attending the seminar.

They are focusing mainly on reporters at small and medium size publications, and also are targeting minority reporters. People can find a link to the SRI application and more information at http://beta.followthemoney.org/media-room/mccormick-sri-workshop/
