Proudly Serving Maryland, Delaware and D.C. Newspapers Since 1908

Friday wrap up - April 15, 2016

Successful session in Maryland

As we heard in the Legislative wrap-up Wednesday, MDDC successfully advocated for our members in our mainstay issues.  In government transparency, small strides were made to strengthen Open Meetings and body camera footage will remain accessible under the PIA.  Student journalists gained more press protections (and their teachers gained protection against retaliation) and the public's right to know government actions through printed public notice was preserved.  Read the full legislative wrap up here.

New member-only feature:  Roundtable Discussions

One of the greatest benefits of MDDC membership is sharing successes, challenges and ideas.  This networking is key to creating best practices.  MDDC is harnessing this networking with short (20-30 minutes max), topic-focused roundtable discussions by conference call.  Our first call will be on Native Advertising, April 28th at 11 am.  Brent Renken of the Frederick News Post will lead.  Bring your questions, ideas and knowledge and share with other members!  Join us?  Let Rebecca know.

Free training for your summer interns

Make sure your interns start off right by sending them to MDDC's FREE intern orientation day on at University of MD College Park on May 25th.  This is open to any intern that will be hosted at a member publication, as well as MDDC interns.  There will be three workshops on various topics and lunch, along with a little debrief on past interns’ experiences and expectations.  The day ends with the Hall of Fame reception so that the interns can get to know MDDC members.  Space is limited, so act quickly and register your intern by emailing Rebecca.

Don’t forget your expanded profile!

Deadline is April 21st!  Ad directors received proofs of the expanded profiles for their publications March 25.  Expanded profiles will be printed in the Editorial Awards publication, which will be distributed at the Editorial Awards event on May 13th, and will be sent to to over 800 people.  The publication serves as a member directory and a demonstration of the reach and coverage of our industry in our region.  Expanded profiles are completely free for members (if you want to highlight your organization further, purchase ad space).  Again this year, our publication is printed and sponsored by APG Chesapeake.

Coming next week

Hall of Fame and Distinguished Service Award honorees will be announced.
