| Plans for the MDDC Press
Association Winter Convention are being finalized with USA Today President Tom Curley and
Baltimore Sun Publisher Mike Waller scheduled to speak. The Feb. 22-23 event will be held
at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Frederick. Deadlines are Feb. 1 for room
reservations and Feb. 15 to register for the convention. Curley will be the featured speaker at the Thursday night dinner. Waller will lead the Friday morning Editorial Seminar. Frank Bass, director of computer-assisted reporting, will present the Associated Press editorial program on using 2000 Census information. The annual Editorial Awards Luncheon, the Associations largest single function of the year, will be held Friday. In addition to the presentation of individual awards to journalists, other featured presentations are the James S. Keat Freedom of Information Award for achievement in FOI issues, announcement of newspaper of the year winners in each division and presentation of 32 best of show awards. One of the highlights of the awards luncheon will be the formal induction of former Washington Post Publisher Katharine Graham as the 34th member of the MDDC Newspaper Hall of Fame. Also being honored at the luncheon will be Melissa Robbins, MDDCs 2000-2001 High School Journalist of the Year, who will be presented with a check for $1,500 from the MDDC Press Foundation. Other convention events will include the Past Presidents Reception, sponsored this year by Daishowa Sales, Ltd., and the Annual Business Meeting on Thursday night.
