Winter Convention Returns to Washington, DC, Gets New Name

The MDDC Press Association’s Winter Convention, set for Feb. 28 – March 1 at the Capital Hilton in Washington, DC, is now the Editorial Conference. Although the event has a new name, it will still have the same great features.

David Broder, a national political correspondent for The Washington Post, will deliver the Editorial Seminar on Friday morning. Broder, who joined The Post in 1966, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary in 1973. He has been called "the most unpredictable, reliable and intellectually honest columnist working today," by Washingtonian magazine.

Other top speakers are being lined up for Thursday evening dinner and the Associated Press program on Friday morning.

The annual Editorial Awards Luncheon, the Association’s largest single function of the year, will be held Friday. In addition to the presentation of individual awards to journalists, other featured presentations are the James S. Keat Freedom of Information Award for achievement in FOI issues, announcement of the newspaper of the year winners in each division and presentation of 32 best of show awards.

Suter Kegg, sports editor emeritus of the Cumberland Times-News, will be inducted as the 35th member of the MDDC Newspaper Hall of Fame at the awards luncheon.

Also being honored is Julia Kay, MDDC’s 2001-2002 High School Journalist of the Year, who will be presented with a check for $1,500 from the MDDC Press Foundation.

Other convention events will include the Past Presidents’s Reception, Annual Business Meeting and Dinner, and Hospitality Suite on Thursday.

Registration information will be mailed soon. Call today for hotel reservations to the Capital Hilton at 1-800-HILTONS and mention the MDDC Press Association. Deadline for room reservations is Jan. 28.
