in Senate The Senate Intelligence Committee is endorsing a provision that would make leaking any classified information to the press a felony punishable by up to three years jail time in federal prison and a fine of up to $10,000. The provision is being considered as part of an intelligence appropriations bill. |

| News Briefs AP Bureau to get New Chief The news Associated Press bureau chief for Maryland and Delaware had not been named at press time, following the departure of Fran Mears earlier this month to become managing editor for Gannett News Service. Times Mirror Sale to Tribune Finalized The purchase of the Times Mirror Co. by the Tribune Co. was overwhelmingly approved by shareholders in June creating the largest-ever newspaper transaction and completing the transaction that began earlier this year. NNA Seeks Papers Support for Postal Case The Naational Newspaper Association is seeking contributions to support its participation in the current postal rate case. Survey Shows Papers Moving to Smaller Page Size The Newspaper Association of American reported in June that a recent survey shows a number of newspapers are moving or have already made the move to a smaller page size. Seed Grants to Help High School Newspapers Three high schools in the MDDC region have received Student Newspaper Partnership Grants as part of the Newspaper Association of America Foundation program. |
| Profile: George E. Randall George, a great-grandson of the Frederick News-Posts founder, is currently vice president and general manager of the paper and general counsel for Great Southern Printing & Manufacturing Company and subsidiaries. Before joining the News-Post in 1982, he taught school in Virginia and gained newspaper experience as a reporter for four years at the Lynchburg News in Lynchburg, VA. He also spent five summers as an intern photojournalist with the News-Post. Since joining the paper, George has spearheaded automation of newspaper inserts and total pagination of the newspapers. He is a past president and served on the MDDC Board. |

Preculdes Finding of Actual Malice Once again, a federal appeals court has allowed plaintiffs to win claims against a news story based on theories conjured up by the imaginative plaintiffs bar, accusing the news reporter of "tortious" newsgathering, even though the libel and privacy claims failed. This time, the story was about over-tired truckers. Next time, it may be your investigative story, so heed this column and set aside the fact that this is a television story. |

Update As many of you are aware, the MDDC Advertising Committee oversees the Association's advertising department. During the April meeting of the Advertising Committee the decision was made to form two new subcommittees, a Classified Subcommittee and a Programming Subcommittee. |
