Expanded Summer Convention Kicks off with Thursday Session

Guiding a newspaper through a changing economy can be a challenge. Strategies and solutions for the newspaper business will be the focus of the upcoming, and expanded, MDDC Summer Convention, Sept. 6-8 at the Tidewater Inn in Easton.

Starting the convention off early on Thursday afternoon will be Ken Blum, author of "Black Ink " and an industry management expert, who will speak on managing your newspaper in tough times. Blum’s session will cover increasing revenues, keeping costs down, and maintaining a good staff.

Blum’s session is the first of many tackling top newspaper issues. The convention will include a briefing on the recent Readership Impact Study, the annual Legal Roundtable, plus programs in the areas of advertising, circulation and technology. Other top speakers are currently being added to the line-up.

There will be committee meetings and a Board of Directors meeting Thursday, before the sessions get underway.

The convention includes time for fun with a reception and cookout at the Queen Anne’s Museum of Eastern Shore Life, plus the Past Presidents Reception, sponsored by Kruger Pulp and Paper Sales, and the Convention Dinner Friday.

There will be an ice cream break sponsored by the Associated Press on Friday afternoon during the sessions. The hospitality suites, sponsored by American Profile Magazine, will be open Thursday and Friday.

The annual MDDC golf tournament at The Easton Club, will conclude the convention on Saturday.

Room rate for the convention is $100 for a single and $110 for a double. To make room reservations, contact the Tidewater Inn directly at 1-800-237-8775 by Aug. 6 and mention the MDDC Press Association.
