Tribune Co., The Sun Reduce Staff

The Baltimore Sun is facing staff cuts following an announcement in mid-June that the Tribune Co., owner of The Sun, will reduce its work force by about six percent – roughly 1,500 positions – through early retirement and job cuts.

Only a handful of The Sun’s 1,600 employees will be affected, according to Carol Dreyfuss, The Sun’s communications manager. Reductions will be made through a voluntary retirement program, and elimination of a "very, very small" number of other full-time positions.

Sun employees were notified in letters from Tribune Chairman, President and CEO John W. Madigan and Sun Publisher and CEO Michael E. Waller. Waller’s letter said about 20 employees at The Sun will be offered voluntary retirement packages.

Tribune Co. cited a slumping advertising sales market. The publishing group’s revenues in May were 11 percent lower than in May 2000 – $303 million compared with $342 million. The company also warned that its earnings will fall short of expectations in the just-ended quarter.
