Knight Foundation Gift to Establish Journalism Center
at Maryland
A multifaceted center to house some of America's most important journalism programs and
publications will be part of a future new journalism building at the University of
Maryland. University and foundation officials have announced a lead gift of $3 million to
establish the JOhn S. and James L. Knight Journalism Center at the Philip Merrill College
of Journalism. |

Publisher, Waller Retires
Denise E. Palmer, president and chief executive officer of a 24-hour cable news station in
Chicago, will become publisher of The Sun in late September. |
Abitibi Closes
Mills, Cuts Production
Abitibi-Consolidate, Inc., the world's largest newsprint maker, said June 25 that it is
shutting down sawmills and cutting wood production in Canada because of slumping demand in
the U.S. market caused by Washington's punitive duties on lumber from Canada. |

Chuck is president of Post-Newsweek Media Inc.,
which publishes 38 Gazette community newspapers, 12 military publications, three
technology magazines and six Internet sites in Maryland and the Washington, DC, region. An
executive with The Washington Post Company for eight years, he began his publishing career
as a reporter for his hometown daily newspaper, The Owosso (MI) Argus-Press, where he won
the Associated Press Managing Editor's top award from reporting on the economic decline of
the Midwestern town where he grew up. His publishing career included five years as
president of Chesapeake Publishing and publisher of The Star Democrat in Easton, MD. |

Thanks to Kiosks, Do-Not-Call Lists Do Not Scare Us Anymore
The circulation department at The Herald-Mail Company in Hagerstown has had a kiosk sales
presence at different retail outlets for many years now. Within the past year we have been
able to turn the corner on order production with a full-time kiosk sales person. Our focus
has been to supplement our newspaper's reliance on telemarketing orders. |

Characters from "Lilo & Stitch," a new animated feature from Disney, are the
latest family-movie stars to tout the beenfits of reading the newspaper in literacy ads
from the Newspaper Association of America. |
