Operators Sign New Four-Year Contract
The Baltimore Sun and the union representing its press operators (Baltimore Newspaper
Graphic Communications Union Local #31) have signed a new four-year contract that began on
May 1, 2002, and includes breakthroguh provisions few major U.S. dailies have achieved.
Until now, most major dailies around the country have had minimum staffing requirements in
place. |

Adviser Dismissed After Censorship Dispute
The contract of a journalism teacher, hired two years ago to start a journalism program at
Southern High School in Baltimore, was not renewed. This followed a temporary shutdown of
the student newspaper by its staff this spring because of a dispute with the principal
over its content. |

Support of St. Mary's Appeal
The MDDC Press Association has signed on to an amicus brief in support of the St. Mary's
Today appeal in the newspaper's lawsuit against St. Mary's County law enforcement
officials. |
Profile: Mike Kane
Mike, vice president of circulation at The News
Journal in Wilmington, began his newspaper career at The Baltimore Sun in 1981 as a releif
district sales manager. While there he held various other positions, including district
sales manager, evening and Sunday zone sales manager, and administrative manager. In 1995
he moved to Pittsburgh as assistant circulation director of the Tribune-Review and became
director in 1997. He assumed his current position at The News Journal in August of 2000.
Mike was named NAA Circulation Sales Manager of the Year in 2000 and Gannett Presidents
Ring Winner in 2001. He serves on the MDDC Circulation Committee. |

Can't Tell a Joke? Stay Out of Texas
In a hard lesson, the Dallas Observer has learned that the usual defenses available
in parody, rhetorical hyperbole and satire are not available when the butts of the
satirical story are a judge of the county court and a criminal district attorney. Why tell
this to MDDC members? Because it is better to read about someone else's problems than to
have the same facts come here to roost. |

Helping Retailers Develop a Realistic Advertising Budget
How do retailers develop an advertising budget? Research shows that less tahn half of
independantly owned businesses do any sort of planned budgeting for advertising. Good
business practice dictates planning is essential to yield good return from the retailer's
advertising budget.
- Ad Spending Decline is Slowing
Newspaper advertising expeditures for the first quarter of 2002 totaled $9.7 billion, a
decrease of 6.2 percent from the same period the year before, according to estimates from
the Newspaper Association of America. The latest figures show a gradual improvement in
several categories and a less severe decline from the previous quarter, when spending fell
11.9 percent.
