Telemarketing, Public Records Top MDDC Legislative Efforts in MD
The MDDC Press Association's legislative efforts this year have had some successes and seem posed for more, especially on the freedom-of-information front, as the 2001 session of the Maryland General Assembly enters its last month.

Court Records Task Force Named
Chief Judge Robert M. Bell has appointed an expanded task force to address the issue of public acces to Maryland court records. The action follows a December hearing on a controversial prposal by a judiciary ad hoc committee that would have severely restricted public access to online and other court records. (See Dec. 200 and Jan. 2001 Press News.)
Circulation Finding Ways to Keep Good Carriers
There are many reason carriers give up their routes, but there are ways to reduce this very expensive problem. Even with a high rate of unemployment in our area (8.4%) we still find it difficult to recruit and keep good carriers.

Profile:  Tom Schmidt
Tom, president of Carroll Publishing Company, started his 28-year newspaper career as a sports writer with the Chicago Tribune. He then became sports editor and managing editor of the Delaware State News, followed by general manager of Delaware Printing Company. In 1985 he moved to Comprint Publishing Co. in Gaithersburg as director of operations. He joined Carroll Publishing in 1991, where he is general manager of its two weekly newspapers, the Catholic Standard, the official newspaper of the archdiocese of Washington, and El Pregonero, the oldest Spanish-languagge newspaper in the Washington market. Tom is president-elect of the MDDC Press Association and serves as chair of its Conventions Committee.
Gazette's Purchase of Chesapeake Papers Under Antitrust Review
Maryland's attorney general is reviewing allegations that the Gazette Newspapers, a division of The Washington Post Co., violated antitrust laws with its recently completed acquisition of publication from Chesapeake Publishing's Southern Maryland Division.
Former MDDC Intern, Towson Times Staffer Dies
Chrystal Clifford, 22, a former participant in the MDDC internship program and a staff member at the Towson Times, died as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident Feb. 17.

2001 MDDC Winter Convention Draws Crowd to Frederick with Awards and Top Speakers
Despite a severe snowstorm and tangled traffic, newspaper executives, featured guests and 250 prize-winning journalists made it to Frederick Feb. 22-23 for a successful MDDC Press Association Winer Convention.

MDDC Internships Enter Third Year
The MDDC internship program continues to grow, with nine college students working at member newspaper in Maryland and the District of Columbia this summer. Four students participated in 1999, the pilot year. In 2000, five students were placed at newspapers.
MDDC to Assist District of Columbia in FOIA Training
Washington D.C. government has created a Freedom of Information Act Committee to train District employees on FOIA procedures, and the MDDC Press Association has agreed to assist the committee in establishing the training program.

Advertising Include Young Consumers in Ad Plans
An article published in the Feb. 12 issue of Advertising Age, "Marketing to Kids & Tweens," described what many of us with children learned years ago - children and teenagers drive billions of dollars in consumer spending each year from breakfast cereal to family vacation spots.

Stedman Wolf joined the MDDC Press Service in February as an assistant media buyer.

Legal Washingtonpost.com Stops Online Infringer; Damage Award Followed
It sounded like a good idea at the time. Allow registered visitors to post news articles from any newspaper, add their comments and invite other users to comment on the articles.
Press Seeks Access to "Black Book"
Newsorganizations in Frederick have gone back to court this month seeking senctions and findings of contempt against city officials and the convicted head of a prostitution ring and her attorney.
