MDDC Internships Enter Third Year

The MDDC internship program continues to grow, with nine college students working at member newspapers in Maryland and the District of Columbia this summer. Four students participated in 1999, the pilot year. In 2000, five students were placed at newspapers.

The interns for 2001 and their assignments are Claudia Lentz, Towson University, to the Towson Times/Jeffersonian; Stacey Myers, Western Maryland College, to the Gaithersburg Gazette; Mary Rechichar, Columbia Union College, to the Common Denominator; Esther Whieldon, Columbia Union College, to the Hagerstown Herald-Mail and from the University of Maryland College Park, Amanda Fluharty to the Bowie Blade-News; Tyisha Manigo to The Daily Record; Penny Riordan to the Frederick News-Post; and Jeff Schwab to the Montgomery Journal. Robert Erdman, from the University of Delaware, is expected to be placed with a member newspaper shortly.

The eight-week program will begin following the spring semester. MDDC pays a $300 weekly stipend and the host newspapers cover the taxes and business expenses for the interns.

The program was designed to provide working experience to college journalists to encourage them to pursue newspaper careers. The internships are especially targeted to smaller MDDC member newspapers.
