| 600 Awards in Largest Editorial Contest The Baltimore Sun, Herald-Mail of Hagerstown, The Prince George's Journal, Howard County Times and Legal Times of Washington, DC, were the big winners in MDDC Press Association's biggest editorial contest. They accumulated the most contest points in their respective circu-lation divisions to walk off with the coveted "sweepstakes" awards. In all, nearly 600 awards recognizing work done in 1997 were presented to newspaper reporters, editors, photographers and artists at the Annual Editorial Awards Luncheon Feb. 27 during the Association's Winter Convention in Baltimore. With 290 people packing Piccolo's Restaurant at Fells Point, individual first and second place and honorable mention awards were given in each of the 27 editorial categories in the five circulation divisions in the constest. In addition to the individual and sweepstakes awards, Best of Show plaques were presented to the entry judged best in each category regardless of circulation size. Of the 27 Best of Show awards, seven went to The Baltimore Sun, three each to The Washington Post and The News Journal, two each to The Capital and the Cumberland Times-News, and one each to the Silver Spring Gazette, Maryland Independent, Baltimore Messenger, Carroll County Times, Frederick News-Post, Herald-Mail, Legal Times, The Daily Record, The Daily Times and Rockville Gazette. There were 2,200 entries in the 1997 contest, the most in the 40-year history of the contest. Judging was done by the New York Press Association.
