Profile: Deborah Cornely
Cornely is managing editor of The Dundalk Eagle, a 23,000 paid circulation weekly newspaper in southeast Baltimore County. The second of 11 children born to Mary and Kimbel Oelke, Debbie has worked at The Eagle since it was founded by her parents in 1969. With that background, her personal work philosophy is not surprising: "I don't ask any of our staff to do anything that I haven't done or wouldn't do myself."

PERSONAL: Born December 15, 1948, in Dundalk Married to Don Cornely Jr. since 1980. Two cats; no children.

EDUCATION: Graduated from Villa Julie College, Stevenson, MD, with an AA degree in 1968.

PROFESSIONAL: Mentor: "My parents. They raised 11 kids Ñ a daunting task in itself Ñ and started The Eagle at an age when most people are considering retirement. The newspaper's success is a tribute to their resourcefulness and ingenuity. They taught me that ambition coupled with hard work guarantees a good chance of success."

Favorite part of her job: Designing page layout.

Least favorite part of job: "Dealing with folks who are upset with having been mentioned in our ÔPolice Beat.'"

Biggest challenge of job: Keeping up with the technological changes in the industry. "We were late-comers to the computer age. We've now installed the newest desktop technology in our news and composition departments, though we're still playing catch up in other areas. We recently introduced a Web page on the Internet and are just beginning to explore the most advantageous use of that medium."

Most serious challenge to today's newsgatherers: "The growing public perception of the press as an appropriate target of scorn and suspicion."

FUN:
Fantasy job: Singing in a fancy cafe.

Favorite music: Billy Holiday, Tracy Chapman, the second movement of Beethoven's 7th, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, most late 60's and early 70's rock and roll, The Dubliners.

Favorite car: "I like roomy cars, though I drive a Ô97 Nissan Altima. If I could buy any car I wanted, I'd get a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud (and a chauffeur)."

Last book read: The Corner by David Simon.

Last movie seen: Waiting for Guffman. "It was hilarious."

Favorite TV show: "I watch Seinfeld meticulously. Law and Order is also a big favorite."

Hobbies: Antiquing, golf, tennis.

Last vacation: "Last August, Don and I spent a rejuvenating week at the Algonquin Hotel in St. Andrews by the Sea, New Brunswick, Canada."

If she had one entire day to herself, she'd: "Sleep until 9. Take a long, leisurely soak in a hot tub. Visit friends. Lunch at the Polo Grill, followed by a round of golf or antique hunting in Pennsylvania, depending on the weather."

Favorite quote: "All great truths begin as blasphemies," George Bernard Shaw.

If you could be anyone else, who would you be? "Captain Kirk, so I could go where no (wo)man has ever gone before."
