New Member, Officers for Board of Directors

The MDDC Board of Directors at its April 27 meeting nominated a new director and voted two others into positions of leadership as officers of the association.

Kathryn Sinzinger, editor and publisher of The Common Denominator in Washington, D.C., has been nominated to fill the unexpired term of Elaine Brady who recently resigned. Sinzinger is a member of the MDDC FOI Subcommittee. She founded The Common Denomintor in 1998 after serving as a Washington correspondent for newspapers in California, New York and Ohio. Her nomination will be voted on at the Board’s July 19 meeting.

Karen Acton, publisher of Gazette’s Southern Maryland Newspapers and a Board member for the past two years, has stepped up to fill the office of treasurer. This puts Acton in rotation to eventually serve as president of the Association.

Acton began her career with Chesapeake Publishing 18 years ago as an assistant controller and was promoted to controller and then group manager. She was named publisher following Gazette’s purchase of the newspaper from Chesapeake this year.

Moving up to fill the office of secretary, which was held by Brady, was John League. League, editor and publisher of The Herald-Mail, had served as treasurer of the Board since the annual meeting in February.

The 2001-2002 Board Officers are:

President: Mike Powell, The Frederick News-Post

President-elect: Tom Schmidt, Carroll Publishing

Vice President: Jeff Mezzatesta, The Cecil Whig

Secretary: John League, The Herald-Mail

Treasurer: Karen Acton, Gazette Newspapers
