Program Approved by Board of Directors
The MDDC Board of Directors has approved the development of a new business plan for the
MDDC Ad Placement Service (MAPS) that would change the focus and commission structure of
the six-year-old program. |

Internship
Program Heads Into Fourth Summer
The MDDC summer internship program continues to grow, though it has not yet reached its
full potential. Eight students from Maryland and Delaware colleges will spend eight weeks
at member newspapers with stipends paid by the association. They were selected from the
largest group of applicants from a wider geographical area than in the program's three
previous years. |

Worthington
John is a "lifer" at The Aegis/Homestead
Publishing Co. He arrived there in 1973, worked as a reporter for five years and then went
into management. Currently he is vice president and publisher for Homestead Publishing,
which publishes The Aegis, The Record, APG News, and Weekender. He was the fourth
generation of Worthingtons to come into the family business and when the company was sold
to The Baltimore Sun in 1986, stayed on. John was president of the MDDC Press Association
in 1986-87. |

Circulation News
Readership Rises, Circulation Declines
Newspaper readership in the top 50 U.S. markets continued to show improvement, while
circulation numbers dipped slightly, according to recent industry reports.
- Exemption Sought from Telemarketing Regs
The Newspaper Association of America filed comments with the Federal Trade Commission
(FTC) last month urging the exemption of the newspaper industry from national
"do-not-call" regulations, citing the industry's 60 years of responsible
practices in local markets with established customers.

Employment Advertising Shifting to "Multiple Media" Strategy
Employment advertisers, long accustomed to spending most or all of their advertising
budgets in daily newspapers, are steadily shifting their budgets to a "multiple
media" strategy including increasing expenditures with online recruitment sites,
radio and TV stations, and other media, a new report shows.
- Top MDDC Ads of 2001 Honored
Creative and effective ads from newspapers across the region were the focus at the Best of
MDDC 2001 Advertising Awards Luncheon on April 26. More than 350 awards were presented to
newspaper advertising representatives from through Maryland, Delaware and the District of
Columbia for their work during 2001.

Two new members have joined the Board of Trustees of the MDDC Press Association and
officers have been chosed for the current year. |
Washington Post Wins
Two Pulitzers
The Washington Post won two Pulitzer Prizes, one for the investigative piece that was part
of the newspaper's winning Freedom of Information entry in the MDDC Editorial Contest and
one for national reporting. |
