Internship Program Heads into Fourth Summer |
| The MDDC summer internship program continues
to grow, though it has not yet reached its full potential. Eight students from Maryland
and Delaware colleges will spend eight weeks at member newspapers with stipends paid by
the association. They were selected from the largest group of applicants from a wider
geographical area than in the programs three previous years. Ten students and two alternates were offered internships, but some decided on other options. For the first time a Delaware student will fill one of the positions, though a Maryland student who lived in Delaware has had an internship there previously. Twenty-three students from Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia applied for this years positions, an increase of 50 percent over last year. They attend nine colleges. The association provides each intern with a stipend of $2,400 tax-free for the eight-week program. The member newspapers to which they are assigned are responsible for any income tax liability the student incurs plus normal business expenses. To date 17 member newspapers in all three jurisdictions have participated in the program. Applications are sent to all colleges and campus newspapers in the MDDC region early in the fall. At the same time member papers are encouraged to indicate their interest in having interns the following summer. The deadline for applications is early in December, finalists are interviewed in January and decisions are made by the selection committee early in February. This year the selection committee was composed of Jean Thompson of the Baltimore Sun, chair; Mike Powell of the Frederick News-Post, Debbie Cornely of the Dundalk Eagle, Paul Milton of the Towson Times, Jim Donahue of MDDC and Jim Keat, Baltimore Sun (retired), who supervises the program for the Association. 2002 placements are as follows: Elizabeth Babiarz, University of Maryland College Park, Annapolis Capital Elizabeth Boch, University of Maryland College Park, Hagerstown Herald-Mail Marcia Carty, Columbia Union College, Columbia Flier Shawn Day, Mount St. Marys College, Carroll County Times Robin Hammond, Towson University, The Aegis Kristen Martin, Salisbury University, Ocean City Today Michelle Rothman, University of Maryland College Park, Montgomery Gazette April Smith, University of Delaware, Newark Post |
