Margaret Scott Schiff

Schiff, vice president, controller, personnel & administration of The Washington Post, is in her second round of leadership for regional newspapers. Peggy was president of the MDDC Press Association in 1990-1991 and then returned to action last year as head of the committee that spearheaded the creation of the MDDC Press Foundation. Earlier this year she was elected the charitable foundation’s first president. A certified public accountant, Peggy joined The Post’s from Price Waterhouse & Co. Since that time she has held a series of increasingly responsible positions, becoming controller in 1986, vice president in 1987, and assuming responsibility for administration in 1989, personnel in 1992 and operating services in 1997.

Married to Ron Schiff; One son, Andrew, a fifth grader

BS in Accounting, University of Maryland; and MS Business Administration (Finance), the George Washington University.

PROFESSIONAL:

Favorite part of her job: "The variety of challenges and opportunities and working with so many wonderful and talented people."

Least favorite part of her job: "There are never enough hours in the day."

Biggest challenge of job: "Being able to tie up all those loose ends while having an overall plan that allows talented employees to make contributions without being stifled."

Most serious challenge to today’s newsgatherers: "Competing for the time and attention of readers."

FUN:

Favorite music: "Jazz (any Marsalis brother), popular (Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Buffet) and fifth grade band concerts"

Favorite car: "Any one having a driver"

Last book read: Charming Billy by Alice McDermott

Hobbies: "Shopping, watercolors, cooking for friends, golf and anything Little League"

Last vacation: "A week in Canada, visiting Montreal and Quebec, where we enjoyed the great food, great people and a fantastic exchange rate!"

How would you most like to spend a day? "At the beach"

If you could meet anyone else (at any time in history), who would it be? "I would travel back to old England and partake of tea with Queen Elizabeth I or maybe Queen Victoria – a definite role model for the working mom!"

The main benefit you derive from MDDC membership: "MDDC has played a significant role in legislation in Maryland, in providing quality seminars and workshops for its members and in developing an advertising network for our membership."
