MDDC Announces 2013 Reese Cleghorn Internship Winners

By T.C. Cameron

The MDDC Press Foundation has announced its 15th annual class of Reese Cleghorn Interns for the summer of 2013.

Eight students will spend their summer working a paid, eight-week internship at an MDDC newspaper.

The winners are Dan Appenfeller (University of Maryland to the Baltimore Sun), Laura Blasey (Maryland/Frederick News-Post), Marlena Chertock (Maryland/The Gazette), Michael Denison (Maryland/The Daily Record), Monica Herndon (University of Miami/Baltimore Sun Media Group), Michael King (Maryland/Delaware State News), Karen Mawdsley (Maryland/The Herald-Mail) and Heather Mongilio (American University/Carroll County Times).

Kelly Lyons, from the University of Delaware, is the alternate. If one of the eight winners is unable to do the internship for any reason, the alternate is assigned to a paper.

The foundation provides grants to the member newspaper of $2,400 per intern. The newspaper then pays any taxes and fees, so that each intern receives $2,400 in salary. More than 20 newspapers from the MDDC region have participated in the program.

Student journalists attending a four-year college, two-year or community college in Maryland, Delaware or the District of Columbia, or residents of the region attending school out of the state are eligible to apply for the internships.

The foundation began offering summer internships to students in the region in 1999. The foundation placed four students at member newspapers during that first pilot year, and has placed as many as 10 in some years.

Since its inception, the money for the internship program has come from contributions for the members of the MDDC Classified Advertising Network. The members contribute 4 percent of the profits of the network. In recent years, the proceeds from the contribution have dwindled as classified ad sales declined.

The foundation is now working on a new fund-raising program under which MDDC members are being asked to donate one page of ad space per year that the foundation could sell to raise money. Several member papers have already agreed to donate the space. The new board of directors of the MDDC Press Service, which is the advertising company owned by the press association, is working on the details of the ad sale.

Each year, internship applications are sent to all colleges in the MDDC region. The deadline for applications is in November of each year. Finalists are interviewed in December and January. The selection committee makes final selections in February before the annual awards are announced in March.

The foundation is a private, tax-deductible 501(c) 3 organization incorporated and domiciled in the State of Maryland. Its members are the board of directors of the MDDC Press Association, which elects a board of trustees to govern the foundation.
