MDDC Announces 2013 Advertising Contest Winners

By T.C. Cameron

The Frederick News-Post is the bigger winner among large newspapers in the annual MDDC Advertising Awards contest. Other papers leading their circulation divisions are the Carroll County Times, Coastal Point (Ocean View, DE) and the Cape Gazette (Lewes, DE).

For the first time, the awards will not be presented at a luncheon this year. Attendance had declined badly over the past few years, so the luncheon has been canceled. Instead, MDDC will invite winners to several regional gatherings at the offices of member newspapers to be recognized for their achievements.

In Division A — daily papers with circulation above 35,000 — the clear winner was the Frederick News-Post, which won 31 awards, including seven for first place. The Baltimore Sun was next with nine awards and five first place winners. The Annapolis Capital (eight awards/four first place) and Washington Times (five awards/three first place) rounded out the division.

Division B — daily papers with circulation below 35,000 — the Carroll County Times took home 12 awards, including seven first place finishes, followed by The Daily Record in Baltimore (nine awards/five first place), the Delaware State News (seven awards/one first place) and the Star Democrat in Easton, Md. (three awards, two first place).

Coastal Point was the overwhelming winner in Division C — non-dailies with 15,000 or more circulation. The paper won an astounding 38 awards, including 16 first place ribbons. The Catholic Review won seven awards and one first-place nod, while the Howard County Times won twice, including one first place finish.

Finally, Division D — nondailies with less than 15,000 circulation — was dominated by the Cape Gazette. It took 17 awards and eight first place finishes. The Delmarva Farmer was next with eight awards and two for first place, followed by the Baltimore Business Journal (six awards/four first place). The Milford Chronicle and Dorchester Banner each won two awards and a single first place finish.
